A bicycle that is no longer wanted does not have to become waste.
In Salzburg, Austria, Carlavelorep ( www.carlavelorep.at ), a social bicycle workshop run by Caritas Salzburg, shows how discarded bicycles can be given a new purpose.
Carlavelorep
The workshop repairs and sells donated second-hand bicycles, reusing components wherever possible.
Wheels and other parts are repaired, reused or recovered as spare parts.
Bicycles that cannot be restored provide useful materials for other repairs.
What makes this initiative particularly interesting is its social dimension. Its employment programme supports young unemployed people, including young people with refugee backgrounds, by offering practical work experience, guidance and opportunities to develop skills.
Carlavelorep demonstrates how circular economy activities can combine environmental responsibility with pathways towards employment.
